Tourist and other important places
Bolghaty Island and Palace : A narrow long island , the Bolghaty Palace is
located on a 15 acre lawn . the palace built by the Dutch in 1744. The only golf
course in cochin is located here. K.T.D.C runs a tourist hotel in the palace
now. Boats are available for water cruise. Boat services are connected to Cochin
to Bolghaty Island .
Dutch palace , Mattancherry :Built by Portughese with the help of Cochin
Maharaja (the king of cochin) , in 1555 A.D . Rooms contain 17th and 18th
century murals ,depicting scenes from the Indian epics.
Hill palace museum : located in Tripunithura 13 km. from the city . Displays
the erstwhile wealth and prosperity of the royal family of Cochin.
Jewish Synagouge -Mattancherry : the famous Jewish Synagouge and the Jew town
, built in 1568 AD. ,is one of the historic places in kerala . the great scrolls
of the old testament , the copper plates in which the privilage granted by the
King of Cochin are recorded and the exquisite Chineese hand painted tiles are of
interest to the tourists.
St .Francies Church (Fort Cochin) : the church was built in 1510 AD., by the
Portughese and is the first church built by Europeans in India.
Trikkakara temple: Trikkakara is the legendary seat of the King Mahabali. The
Onam time is the visiting period of the King. ( 15 km. Ernakulam ).
Udayamperoor : (18 km. from Ernakulam) Has an ancient Church . it is believed
that the Bishop's Synod known as Udayamperoor Sunahados was held hero to
liberate the eastern churches from the sovereignty of Pope.
Kalady : 52 kms. From Ernakulam ,Kalady is one of the important pilgrim
centres .Is the birth place of the great saint Adi Sankaracharya, the great
saint , philospher and religious reformer of the 8th century .
Cochin museum : Which was at the Dubar Hall ,has been shifted to the Hill
Palace at Tripunithura . the collectinos include 19th century oil paintings ,old
coins , wooden sculptures, sculptures in stone and plaster of paris, copies of
Mural paintings collections from Cochin royal family, etc. Kathakali centers
